FEB 18 UPDATE: A wind advisory is now in effect from midnight tonight through noon Wednesday. The Extreme Cold Watch for Wednesday night through Thursday has been upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning.
From the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS):
- WHAT...For the Wind Advisory, north winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected. For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 9 above expected. For the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 7 above expected.
- WHERE...Bastrop, Bexar, Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe, Hays, and Travis Counties.
- WHEN...For the Wind Advisory and Cold Weather Advisory, from midnight tonight to noon CST Wednesday. For the Extreme Cold Warning, from midnight Wednesday Night to noon CST Thursday.
- IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is
- exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to
- hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
- Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
- Secure outdoor objects.
- Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.
- Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
- Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
- Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.
- Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
TUESDAY, FEB 18: A Cold Weather Advisory/Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for much of Central Texas, including Caldwell County. The US National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio Texas predicts that temperatures will drop quickly behind an arctic front late Tuesday to produce wind chills in the 6 to 20 degree range Tuesday night through noon Wednesday.
The watch goes into effect at midnight tonight and will remain in effect through noon Wednesday.
An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for wind chills of 0 to 10 degrees Wednesday night through noon Thursday.
The Calvary Chapel Lockhart at 204 N. Main Street in Lockhart will be opening its doors starting this evening as a warming station and will continue that service through the cold snap.
During the cold snap, please remember to:
- Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.
- To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly.
- Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
- Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
- Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
- Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
