Caldwell County Commissioners this week approved a pair of proclamations honoring the Juneteenth Holiday.
A Juneteenth Celebration is planned in St. John's Colony on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The county's administrative offices will be closed Wednesday, June 19 in observance of the federal holiday.
Caldwell County Commissioners this week approved a resolution recognizing the important day that was officially made a federal holiday in 2021, as well as a resolution commemorating Juneteenth as it relates to St. John's Colony.
The holiday commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas. Although President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863, slaves in Texas waited an additional 2 1/2 years to receive word of their liberation when, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston and announced the slaves had been freed.
